Our Sustainable Tech Gear: Refurbished MacBooks, Second-Hand Monitors

As a web design studio, we are constantly exploring new ways to incorporate sustainability into our daily operations. From reducing paper waste to sourcing eco-friendly materials, we are committed to doing our part to protect the environment.

Refurbished electronics are not only a cost-effective alternative to brand new devices, but they also help to reduce the amount of electronic waste that ends up in landfills. Our studio is proud to be using sustainable gear that not only helps reduce our carbon footprint, but also supports a circular economy.

We have a 2021 16-inch Macbook Pro previously used for display, and a refurbished Macbook Air bought from Apple. Our monitors are also sustainably sourced, with an LG Ultrafine 5K 27-inch monitor bought used on eBay, and an LG 27-inch 4K monitor bought refurbished. We are especially grateful for the Macbook Pro 13 inch gifted to us by Klyk, a company dedicated to saving technical waste through the sale of refurbished electronics to sustainable businesses.

By using sustainable gear, we are not only reducing our impact on the environment, but also promoting a more conscious and responsible approach to technology. Klyk's mission aligns perfectly with our own values, and we are honored to have received a refurbished device from them. We are excited to continue using this MacBook Pro in our daily operations and to see how it performs.

If you run your own business and are thinking of ways you can be more sustainable, here are a few tips:

  1. Reduce energy consumption: One of the biggest challenges for digital businesses is the amount of energy required to power the servers and other equipment. By using energy-efficient hardware and implementing server virtualisation, businesses can reduce energy consumption and their carbon footprint.

  2. Use green hosting: By choosing a hosting provider that uses renewable energy and has a strong commitment to sustainability, digital businesses can ensure that their website is powered by clean energy.

  3. Opt for digital communication: Encourage digital communication and reduce the need for paper-based communication. This can be achieved by using digital tools such as email, video conferencing, and collaboration platforms.

  4. Recycle and reuse: Encourage the recycling of old hardware and the reuse of electronics. This can be done by buying used or refurbished tech, taking gear to a repair service, or donating old electronics to organisations that will put them to good use.

  5. Minimize e-waste: E-waste is a growing problem, and digital businesses can help reduce it by properly disposing of electronics and supporting e-waste recycling initiatives.

By incorporating these sustainability practices into their daily operations, digital businesses can play a critical role in reducing their environmental impact and promoting a more sustainable future. We encourage others in the tech industry to consider doing the same, and we want to give a special shoutout to Klyk for their commitment to reducing e-waste in a sustainable manner."
